Mackerel Grind to Bonito Action: September 5th Long Beach Charter Recaps the Catch
The J&R Products Angler Rewards program kicked off the new month on 9/5/26 with another local charter out of Long Beach. With no live bait waiting at the bait barge, our anglers had to put in work right out of the gate—grinding early in the morning to make their own tank full of fresh mackerel bait.
That extra hustle paid off, unlocking an exciting late-summer mix of high-speed surface predators.
The Catch Breakdown
Bonito (Heavy Action): Plentiful surface blitzes kept the deck chaotic in the best way possible with non-stop reel-screaming runs.
Yellowtail (2 Landed): Quality over quantity. With little bait, your anglers relied on surface irons to entice two prized yellowtail to commit.
Calico Bass: Solid kelp and structure picks rounded out an action-packed day.
Skipjack Tuna: A thrilling late-season surprise. Fast, aggressive, and pure muscle on light-to-medium gear.
From sabiki rigs for mackerel to hauling in hard-fighting yellowtail and bonito, this trip proved that J&R Angler Rewards members know how to work for their catch.
Special thanks to the charter crew for guiding us to the bait and keeping us on the fish all day!
